Gyprock EC08 Complete was selected by boutique architecture and design practice, Danette Architecture, as the internal lining solution for the recent Cochlear Education Centre (CEC) fit-out at the Australian Hearing Hub, Macquarie University. Danette Architecture was commissioned to coordinate the design of the new Cadaver and Research Laboratory for Cochlear, which is one of the world's leading hearing implant equipment companies.

When designing the new laboratory for Cochlear, architect Mark Wilson had to consider the very clear specifications required for such a state of the art facility. “With laboratory design there are very clear specifications concerning the walls,” explains Wilson. “They must be durable and impact resistant. Special consideration must be given for acoustic requirements and the crucial element for a laboratory design is to make sure there is no opportunity for moisture or mould to grow in the walls,” he continues.

Wilson worked closely with CSR Gyprock in researching the appropriate wall materials for the laboratory space and was immediately sold on the innovative properties and practical design solutions that EC08 Complete could offer. The premium multi-function plasterboard is engineered to meet a broad range of performance requirements and the low VOC board surpassed all considerations of the Danette Architecture brief, satisfying both the architect and client with its superior qualities.

"Gyprock's EC08 Complete had the exact properties required for such a specialist laboratory fit-out, including mould and moisture resistance, fire and acoustic rating and impact resistance." Mark Wilson, Danette Architecture.

“Additionally the low VOC levels complied with the Green Star ratings of the existing building,” he said.

Gyprock's Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) certified EC08 Complete is Australia's first environmental plasterboard that has mould resistance, which makes it particularly ideal for projects that require a sensitive execution such as the new Cochlear research centre. The low VOC board is manufactured to Australian Standard AS2588 Gypsum Plasterboard.

The superior education and research facility for Cochlear was purpose built to teach surgeons and hearing specialists from the Asia Pacific area the surgical procedures associated with Cochlear implants. It comprises of a PC2 classified large surgical laboratory with medical storage facilities and a separate research facility. EC08 Complete and the comprehensive EC08 range of internal lining solutions for sustainable building, offer practical and innovative design solutions for such cutting edge facilities.

A second Cochlear CEC facility is now operating in Brisbane.
