How do I soundproof my home?
There can be a lot of noise in a modern home – TVs, radios, teenagers with friends and their music, the excitement of video games, even the washing machine or the dryer. Finding a quiet haven in which to simply relax is getting so difficult that many home builders are now including sound proofing and sound insulation in their home design.
Gyprock Soundchek™ plasterboard is Australia's first acoustic insulation plasterboard designed to stop or reduce the transfer of unwanted domestic noise through walls and ceilings. Its super high-density construction, reflectivity and sound dampening characteristics result in noise reduction between rooms of up to 75%.

When is back-blocking required on a ceiling?
Back-blocking is a joint reinforcing system where pieces of Gyprock™ plasterboard are adhered to the back of the sheets, behind certain joints. Back-blocking is an important safety measure, to reinforce certain joints which often undergo additional stresses and are therefore more susceptible to cracking. These stresses can be caused by many reasons, including subsequent building movement or by unusual loadings such as heavy bumping of a wall, or trades people moving about in ceiling spaces.
The resultant cracking of the finished jointing often requires a call-out for warranty repair, which is an avoidable and unwanted additional cost to the installer/builder.
For Ceilings, back-blocking is required in level 4 and 5 finishes where three or more recessed joints occur in a continuous ceiling area.

Control joints, when/where do I use them?
Control joints are incorporated in a building to permit movement in the structure and must be carried through all areas lined with Gyprock™ plasterboard.
Gyprock™ plasterboard surfaces should be isolated from structural elements by installing control joints:
- When a Gyprock™ plasterboard surface abuts any structural element or dissimilar wall assembly.
- In long partition or wall runs, at not more than 12m centres.
- In continuous ceiling areas, spaced at no more than 12m centres in both direction.
