Hear the difference

With so many recent advancements in entertainment products, dedicated home cinemas are becoming an important feature in many homes.

No one in Australia understands this better than David Moseley. David is the Designer for Wavetrain Acoustics and describes himself as the country’s only home cinema acoustics/design specialist. He works with some of Australia’s best custom installation companies, providing a complete home cinema design and calibration service. His new studio showcase, featuring Gyprock Soundchek™, demonstrates how high-density plasterboard can greatly improve a room’s acoustic performance.

“Wavetrain Acoustics provides a total home entertainment solution for clients,” explains David. “We offer expert advice in sound isolation and internal room acoustics, and we also manufacture cinema-specific products not available anywhere else in Australia.

“We fully understand the impact correct acoustic design can have on home cinema sound quality,” he adds.
Due to the growing demand for high-quality home cinema systems, and the extreme difficulty in effectively explaining the sound differences between average and high-quality room acoustic performance to customers, David decided to build a home cinema acoustics showcase at his Taren Point, NSW studio.

“The showcase consists of three different home cinema rooms, each with a 12 dB improvement in sound isolation,” says David. “The first room is made using standard construction techniques. The two higher-grade rooms were built with increased attention to detail, including added mass using high-density Gyprock Soundchek™, Bradford SoundScreen™ insulation, high-quality flexible sealer and acoustically-rated doors (which Wavetrain Acoustics manufactures).”

This means that the customers can stand outside each room and literally hear the difference quality materials such as Gyprock Soundchek™ can make,” he says. “Not only does it prevent interruption from noise from outside the room, but also ensures you can enjoy your DVD without annoying other members of the family or neighbours.”

Gyprock Soundchek™ is a high performance, ultra high density, recessed edge plasterboard that has been purpose designed to resist the passage of sound. It is the densest product in the Gyprock™ range, to ensure the highest acoustic performance.

“Obviously the density of materials is a major element when improving the acoustic isolation performance of a room,” says David. “This means there is a significantly improved performance when using 10mm Gyprock Soundchek™ compared with standard construction. You can hear the difference!”
